The Borrowers-Film Essay!!

The Borrowers by Ella J
In 1997 Peter Heitt's 'The Borrowers' film was released. This film was first published as a book series which was written by Mary Norton. In this particular film Hewitt uses many shots such as Close Up, High Angle Shot and Birds Eye View. He uses these shots to make us feel like we are the borrowers.

In the borrowers there is a close up of the lawyers(Mr Ocious P. Potter) face. He has a smirk on his face which tells us that he's up to no good. This is showing his true colours and that he is not really a person you would trust. This also shows that he is in charge.

They use a high angle shot when PeaGreen doesn't want to go borrowing. This is showing us that he is scared of being outside home. When Arietty looks down at PeaGreen the camera also looks down on him. We can see that PeaGreen is scared because he is tucked up in a small ball.

Also they use Birds Eye View when PeaGreen and Arietty are about to fall out of the  moving van. They use Birds Eye View to make us feel scared. This also shows that they are panicked and stressed.Image result for the borrowers filmImage result for the borrowers

Hydroslide story

Hydroslides

The bus pulled in at DeBretts hot pools and we hopped out. I love to go on all the hydroslides here. Lot's of girls nervously raise their hand to ride the hydroslides. I rushed into the girls changing rooms. Hurridly  I change into my togs and walk straight into one of the green hot pools. They almost burn my skin but I realise it's just because I've been in the cold weather.

Jade and I swim around. We doggy-paddle under the bridge. "Is this really hot for you?" I ask Jade. "Yes!" replied Jade. I looked at her wrist and there was nothing. I was about to ask her why she didn't get a hydroslide band but something was stopping me. So I didn't ask her.

Wwweee! I shoot down the blue hydroslide. I then queued up for the dragon slide. Some of the boys were doing trains of 5 or 6. They were kicked off for doing that. "Do you want to race Olivia?" I ask Olivia. The green light goes and we're off!

Leonardo Da Vinci machines

Da Vinci machines

Is going to the museum a waste of time? Going to the museum was definitely not a waste of time.

We were learning at the same time we just didn't know it. One thing I learnt I learnt was that Leonardo Da Vinci had 5 jobs. Da Vinci built the first flying machine. Da Vinci invented the first scuba diving gear. Da Vinci invented a bicycle that can only go straight.

It was very interesting. I found it interesting playing with some of the machines that Da Vinci made such as the robot drummer. It was also interesting when the lady told us a story about Da Vinci and how he made a robot for a kings party. He also made a lion for when the French king came. I thought that the bicycle Da Vinci made was interesting because it is different to the ones in our days.

Enviro day 2016

Enviro day

On Wednesday the 29th of June, Pirongia school had an enviro day. Each class was buddied with another class. We were buddied with room 5.  We had 2 mini assemblys. The first one was before morning tea and we had a lady called Sally come and talk to us about water. She told us about how water is wasted and about the 4 minute shower timer. She was working with rooms 4 and 14. With room 5 we choose a buddy and played a few maths games with them. We wrote about what our buddy says about the past enviro days we've had. Archie sounded like he had been enjoying enviro day so far. After lunch we went to room 5 and we did some buddy reading with our reading buddies. We then shared some of our plays and I was so excited when my group got to share 'Animal Court' with the rest of room 9 and room 5. Then we buddied up with a different buddy and we drew a garden. My buddy Paige said that she wanted to draw a fruit and vege garden so that's what we did. I asked her what fruits and veges we should draw. "Potatoes, Strawberries, Carrots, Broccoli, lemons, mandarins and oranges." came her reply.

My Inquiry Journey 2016 term 2

My Inquiry Journey

This term our focus was science and our theme was planet earth and beyond. I chose the question How does the Aurora Borealis form? This is what I found out.

1. What is the Aurora Borealis?
This is a phenomena seen in the sky. It looks like coloured lights dancing in the sky. It is commonly known as the Northern Lights.

2. Where does it happen?
It happens in a doughnut shape above the magnetic poles. The best place to see them is Greenland , Norway , Alaska , Canada and Sweden. Your best chance of seeing them is late Autumn or early Spring.

3. How does it form?
The sends out a solar wind with electrons(positive or negative). When the wind reaches earth the electrons follow the lines of magnetic force from the earths core. When the electrons hit oxygen and nitrogen atoms above the earths surface. They react and produce colour. If you have oxygen reacting you get red and green lights. If you have nitrogen reacting you get blue and purple lights.

4. Other facts you probably didn't know
You can't see them if there is city or street lights on. You also can't see them if it's too cloudy. All the magnetic and electrical forces react constantly creating shifts and flows that make it dance.

My learning conference

My Learning Conference

At my learning conference I stood up and shared my mihi in front of my parents and teacher. I am very proud of what I have learnt and understood. I think that I am going to be achieving my goals by the end of the year. Here is the link to my goals (click on the title then click on the blue writing).

Masterchef Challenge

Masterchef

In Kahikatea team we did a masterchef challenge. This is what my group made. We made a salad. In our salad was ham , carrot , cheese , red pepper and nuts. In my group was Emily , Megan , Corbin , Josh.S , Thomas and me. We didn't win but we had lots of fun. I reccomend that Kahikatea team does it again next year.

tough kid challenge

Tough Kid Challenge

On your marks, Get Set ,GO! Mr Mathews bangs the clappers and us 10 year olds sprint off to tackle the first challenge. I jump over the tyres and start to climb the hay bales. Rushing off I go to the balance beams. Speedily but carefully I go over the balance beams. Jumping over the little obstacles, I run towards the water slide. Slipping along, I make my way towards the best part the mud pit! I scramble through it and mud squelchs through my toes. Quickly I dodge around the poles in the ground and I cross the finish line. I've finished 8th place. When all the seniors are done  me, Aylee, Sophie, Katie, Ella.D flopped into the mud pit. Ms Vandy took a photo of us all flopping in at the same time. When I got up I was covered in mud. Pretty much from head to toe. I had so much fun doing the tough kid challenge and I recommend that we do it again next year. I loved doing the tough kid challenge and I was so disappointed that my brother and I missed out on doing the inter-school one because it sounded like so much fun.

Ella.J's mihi 2016

My Mihi

Tehei Mauriora, This is my mihi. It tells you about me and my family. When I first learnt my mihi I was nervous and unsure and very quiet. I've had quite a lot of practise now and I know my full mihi off by heart. I'm quite confident about it now and I speak with a loud , clear voice. I hope you enjoy watching it if it works!

Washing machines

Washing machines

The annoying washing machine impatiently waits to be fed. It would moan and groan all day if it could but we don't let it. Impatiently it waits in the laundry room just waiting, waiting, waiting until zap! Someone feeds it. It would shout and cheer like it was cheering on a sports team.

"I'm still hungry!" grumbles the wailing washing machine. "Oh do be quiet you old machine." mentioned the kitten loudly. The washing machine rocks side to side because he is still waiting and he's still bored. All he ever says is I'm bored and hungry, I'm bored and hungry, I'm bored and hungry. The washing machine jumps around the room  as it bores out of it's mind.

Then mum walks in with big handfulls of washing. "Yay someone has come to feed me!" says the washing machine excitedly. It jumps around with happiness and excitment.  Now we definitely have a new problem with our washing machine.

James and the giant peach similies

Similies

These  are my similies response to 'James and the giant peach' by Roald Dahl.

. Aunt sponger is as fat as a wild pig
. Aunt sponger is like a rubber sponge
. Aunt sponger looks like a pig that has rolled in mud
. Aunt sponger looks like a machine about to explode
. Aunt spiker's words are like a pitchfork stabbing into James heart
. Aunt spiker's mood is like an ape being woken up too early
. Aunt spiker looks like a wrinkly foot
. The words hit James like a shotput hitting the ground

2016 school fair

School fair

On the 4th of March we ran a school fair for the community to come along to. We did this to fun raise for our new sports shed. I thought the school fair was absolutely wonderful. Kahikatea team was in charge of the sweet treats. This included 150 toffee apples, toffee cups, fudge cups, candy floss, russian fudge, coconut ice and chocolate fudge. We had a lot of fun making these in the school kitchens. Our school fair included pony rides, rugby toss, pick the nose, petting zoo, sack race, gumboot toss, maze, shoot the hoop, cake stalls and much, much more. We had a lot of fun selling and buying things. The school fair was great and I recomend another school fair next year.

Purekireki Marae

Purekireki Marae

At the Marae, I learnt how to carve and weave. Weaving was  different to how I expected it to be. This is a photo of me doing the weaving with Pippi.  We made Putiputi. Putiputi means flower. We were asked to name our putiputi. I named mine Putiputi of harakeke. We also learnt how to carve. Carving was quite different to how I expected. You use a chisel and a mullet. It was hard work learning how to carve. We got a choice of what picture we wanted to carve. I chose a koru because I wanted a bit of a challenge.

 Tryathlon 2016

School tryathlon 2016

On your marks, get set, go!I  run as hard as I can. My heart beats like a drum never stopping.  Before I know it I'm at half way. Suddenly I feel like I need to stop but I don't. I've passed Dakota and I can see Charlotte ahead of me. Then I see where I started my run is all most  over but I still have a few meters to go. I speed over to where my bike is and start biking.  I zoom round and pass Charlotte. I'm in the lead. Just my swim to go. I run past and dive in to swim my 5 laps. Speedily I swim my 5 laps and jump out of the pool. I'm sprinting desperate to get there, I'm almost out of breath ,nearly there. I've made it Yay! I look down Mrs Cullen is writing my name down next to the number 1 which means that I've won the 10 year old girls tryathlon. I feel proud and happy and I feel great. Then I go to the edge of the finish at support the others as they come along the finish chute. I really liked the tryathlon and I can't wait to do it again next time. This is a picture of my brother when he finished his tryathlon with mum ,my aunty ,my uncle, my nana and me in the back round.
